Garden 2012

This summer has been a little crazy (mainly the month of June).  Aside from the craziness from school to graduation to traveling in June, I was able to do a garden this year.  I got overly excited about warm weather one mid April afternoon and planted the first few plants (starter plants from Home Depot).  Then we had temperatures in the 50s with frost the next week.  Boo.  Luckily, we covered the entire garden the best that we could and saved most of them.

Here was the garden in mid June. (the radishes were to the left of the snow peas)

Here was the garden a few days ago.

I love gardening.  I love planting seeds and watching them become full fruiting plants.  I love the calm consistency of a garden.  Dad, you may want to put this one in the books...but I even like to go out to my little garden and weed.  Yep, I said it.  I've come a long way since the days when Dad would make Emily and I weed all the flower beds in our yard on a Saturday and then go out there and proceed to meticulously check each bed at the end of the day.  It was not our favorite Saturday hobby.

Radishes were one of the first veggies that we enjoyed.  We like radishes on salads, but our homegrown radishes were extra spicy (still fine, just not the same as the store bought ones we're used to).

We had a ton of snow peas.  I would snack on them every time I went out there.  They were crunchy, sweet, and great on salads.

Tomatoes will be ready soon! Although I feel like last year and this year we were really lacking in the tomato department.  Last year there was leaf spot all over the plants.  This year, there's still some leaf spot (see yellowish leaf below), but the plants just aren't as full and fruitful as I would hope.  We've had better luck with cucumbers, green beans, and now peas.  This year is the first that we've done any squash (zucchini).

And we've had an abundance of lettuce.  It's awesome for all the salads that Bryce likes to eat.  We just have to pick what we want to eat and no more.  It literally wilts in a few hours after you pick it.

We've started eating our green beans.  Looove green beans! We have done bush beans the last couple years.  I think they're easier because they don't require a trellis and are a little easier to pick.

Hope everyone has a great 4th of July!
