I got inspired (of course) by Pinterest so I decided to try my hand at embroidery.
Using this tutorial, I got my supplies all at JoAnn's and felt from etsy: embroidery needles, embroidery floss/thread, embroidery hoop, and a heat transfer pencil.
I used left over painter's drop cloth (yes, I still have some left over!). I cut a 10"x10" square and sewed the edges so I wouldn't be pulling out strings constantly. I picked out the colors to cut the little flags. Then I used regular computer paper to trace (off of my computer screen) her name in a cursive font. I used the heat transfer pen on the paper and my iron to get the name onto the fabric. Finally, I began to hand-embroider. It was really easy, I just had to keep an eye on the tension and length of my stitches to keep it relatively even.
Almost done-looking good!
Then I picked out the color for the flag string.
In case it is ever taken out of the hoop and maybe framed, I decided to keep it a square. So I finished the ends of the flag string on the sides.
When she decides to come out of my belly, I will add the date below the flags.
The plan is to hang the hoop on her door, I just haven't gotten myself to hammer a nail into the door yet. I'm hoping I can find a less permanent way to hang it. I used painter's tape to hold the rest of the fabric in the hoop when it hangs on the door.
It was such a fun easy project! It was also pretty relaxing. It reminded me of when I used to crochet back in the beginning of my college years. I definitely want to embroider more things now. Maybe to embellish the fabric on a throw pillow or on a table runner...

I also know a cute girl named Addison Lynn that would just be head over heels for something like this. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is ADORABLE. Wow! You did a really great job!!!
Meredith, I hear you ... but Ellis ANN shares the middle name ... :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, Elissa ... this is awesome! I'm so impressed with the really neat embroidery stitches. Surely this wasn't your first ever embroidery project!
Awww so cute. Madison has a very talented mom good job :)
ReplyDeleteThat's the cutest simple project I've seen in a while. Too bad little boys aren't down with cutesy things like that... Jude probably wouldn't appreciate that the way Madison will.
ReplyDeleteMy family recently started a tradition of drawing a picture on a tablecloth (the same one every year) at Thanksgiving of something that happened that year, and then I've been embroidering over the pencil in a different color each year. I can't wait to see what it will be like in twenty years!
