Cross Country Skiing

In January, we journeyed deep into West Virginia to go cross country skiing at White Grass. Both of us had never tried it before, but our friends, Bynum and Katherine, convinced us that it wasn't too difficult to pick up. It's definitely different than downhill skiing. More like hiking in snow with skis on, the boots are flexible allowing for easy movement. We went only for one day, for about 4 or 5 hours, and we were able to trek up the mountain, and then ski back down.

Once we got to the top, the view was beautiful. We could see other neighboring ski resorts over the snow topped mountains.
All the trails are more narrow than downhill runs, and are more windy, so it is a longer ride down the mountain. It was so fun!

It was also very reasonable, if you don't want to spend a fortune at a downhill ski resort. All the people at White Grass were very laid back and friendly. We stayed about 35 minutes away from White Grass, at the Appalachian Cabins in Seneca Rocks. The rustic log cabins, with huge fireplaces and antlers for chandeliers were fun and comfortable. The one we stayed in could have easily fit up to 10 or 12 people.

They even had a hot tub out back for each cabin! We had fun cooking dinner together, playing board games, and just hanging out after a day of skiing. The next day was rainy and overcast, so we drove up to see a beautiful waterfall nearby Seneca Rocks.

We also visited an Old Country General Store near our cabins. The boys felt right at home.

We had such a fun weekend with with Katherine, Bynum, Rachel, and Brett! Hopefully we do it again next year.
