Dad and Kim visit: Hike near Isenfluh and farewell dinner

All over Switzerland, there are trails.  Miles and miles of trails for walkers, hikers, and bikers.  Both paved and gravel.  All over the country side, through town after town, up mountains, through green hills reminiscent of the UK...you get it.  And we though we hit the jackpot with the Huckleberry Trail in Blacksburg then a few trails near our house in Portland.  Now we really understand the jackpot of trails.  It's like heaven for my runner husband.

While we were staying in Isenfluh, we walked maybe 30 minutes up trails and found a fun picnic shelter area complete with a swing and firepit.  In true Swiss fashion, we brought along lunch, cooked it on the fire, and sat outside in the freezing cold for awhile.

Maddie had a smile ear to ear almost the entire time Nana and Papa were here.  Nana and Papa are so much more fun than Mom and Dad!  Nana knows all these fun new songs with hand motions!  [She still hasn't stopped singing Kumbaya with hand motions, saying "here is the church, here is the steeple, open the doors..." also with the hand motions, singing as loud as she can while swinging "Let's go fly a kite" from Mary Poppins, and more.]  Papa lets Maddie help him in the kitchen whenever her little heart desires.  He also sits through the entire movie of Frozen without interrupting (too often).

Getting outside hiking and building a fire was really fun.  Both Dad and Bryce were in their element.

And then it was really fun getting back indoors where we could thaw our hands.

We left Isenfluh and drove back home a couple days before they flew back to the USA.  On their last night in town, we ate a big dinner with lots of cheese, played cards, and went to bed tired.  I'm pretty certain we wore ourselves out.  But with family in town and so much to enjoy, we had to do it.  The kids did really well, by the way, with the day trips and traveling.  Maybe their getting used to our crazy not-winding-down life?  Although life does look crazy on the blog, it's pretty slow going on our normal schedule.  I can't help but document visits and travels here on the blog, so in 5 years, we can look back like we do now to those newly married times!

  1. I'm so impressed that Europeans spend so much time outdoors, even when it's cold outside. I think it would be great to do that and experience the fresh air, and not be such a wimp about the cold like I am now. :) Aww I love that Maddie had such a great time with the grandparents! What did you make for dinner with potatoes & all those toppings? Looks interesting & yummy!

    1. Raclette! you add toppings you want to a little plate/tray, then a thick slice of raclette cheese on top, put it under the griddle and let it melt, then eat with a side of boiled potatoes. typical toppings are mini pickles and those pickled pearl onions. Really good! Pretty heavy meal though, also served with bread, so we added a salad and some fresh veggie toppings! xo
